I have received several trapdoor snails and I don't know if they are dead or alive. How do I tell?
They are not in their shells only 2 have their trapdoors closed. Please help.
Well, I've never had trapdoor snails, but I have had some other snails. The easiest way to tell is time. If they move, obviously, they are alive. If they never move, then, well, deadness.
I had a snail once that I was sure was dead, it didn't move for a few hours and I poked it and everything, but the next day I found it cleaning the glass like usual. So time is always the best way to tell.
In addition to time, another very good indicator is smell. If they smell dead, they are dead. If you think you have a dead snail but aren't sure, separate it from your fish and stuff and then wait for it to either move or start stinking. Disgusting, yes, but it's the most reliable way I've come across, especially if you're not familiar with how the snail normally acts.
